Methods of soil protection and fertility maintenance in apple and pear orchards in the higher rainfall areas of the southern and central tablelands

Methods of soil protection and fertility maintenance in apple and pear orchards in the higher rainfall areas of the southern and central tablelands

Agric. Gaz. N.S. W 56: 443-6; 495-7

There is evidence that the soils in many orchards in New South Wales are becoming depleted of essential elements. Suggestions are put forward for raising the level of soil fertility cheaply. Many of the fruit-growing slopes could be cultivated with reasonable safety, and soil fertility maintained if a heavy leguminous winter cover crop were grown, protecting the soil while in growth and checking erosion by the large amounts of fibrous matter in the soil after being turned in.
