New evaluation of seedling emergence in direct seeding in submerged soil and breeding rice for high seedling emergence

Rice seedling emergence in direct sowing in submerged soil was studied in Japan to determine the degree of forced sprouting, temperature and sowing depth in 8 representative rice cultivars (Akamai, Akihikari, Koshihikari, Kinuhikari, Akage, Arborio, Lemont and Habataki). Germination in submerged soil was optimal at 25 degrees C for 2-3 days, and seedling emergence varied widely among cultivars sown 2 or 3 cm deep at 25 degrees C and 1 cm deep at 15 degrees C.
