An account is given of past studies on the nutrition of the Italian people, and an outline of the present extensive programme of investigation, which falls under three heads: (1) chemical analysis of natural and artificial foods produced by Italy and her colonies; (2) research on the basal metabolism and material and energy exchanges with reference to sex, age, occupation and locality to establish true food requirements; (3) a series of dietetic surveys covering the whole of Italy.
