Pellagra in Tsolo district

Pellagra in Tsolo district

S African Med Jour 16: 385-387

59 cases of pellagra among natives of a South African district are descr. and analyzed. 81% of the patients were [male][male]. There was a preponderance of Pondomisi "Red" natives, a more primitive group than the Christianized "dressed" natives. The diets of the pellagrins were not obviously different from those of the healthy natives, but the "Red" natives are known to drink more beer. Since all the natives supplement their diet with beer, an attempt was made to ascertain whether or not those who had pellagra were excessive drinkers. Sufficient information was obtained in 31 cases, and of these, 23 (74%) were considered excessive drinkers. This fact, however, is considered to be only suggestive. An analysis of the native (Kaffir) beer is cited in which the only vit. found was vit. C.
