Observations were made on 13 fields of definitely known ages of abandonment over a period of 3 yrs. On Plainfield and Boone series of sandy soils weeds of European and southern extraction dominate for the first few yrs., giving way to prairie species which reach a maximum at about 15 yrs. These finally decline as the forest, represented by Pinus banksiana and oaks, becomes the climax.
