Triple soaking and drying of seed (hardening) induced a more xeromorphic structure, increased osmotic pressure, intensified metabolism (respiration and photosynthesis) and, what is thought to be particularly important, induced greater hydrophily of protoplasmic colloids; owing to these physiological readjustments the hardened plants showed a greater endurance to drought.
