When sugar cane planting material is pretreated with a solution of ethyl alcohol a very marked increase in root production is noted. This is especially true at marginal temperatures. At favourable temperatures, the phosphate ion is as effective as alcohol in stimulating root development, especially in those sets naturally containing small amounts of phosphate. At marginal temperatures, however, phosphate is ineffective.
