As an introduction to a discussion of the serious problem of scurvy among native labourers, a brief review is given of recent clinical observations on scurvy, and of methods of diagnosing vitamin C deficiency. The test dose method of Harris and Ray was used to determine the reserves of vitamin C of native labourers in an attempt to make an early diagnosis of scurvy which frequently developed in the first few weeks after arrival at the mines, and caused great waste of labour.
