Seedling reactions of wheat varieties to stem rust and leaf rust and of oat varieties to stem rust and crown rust

Seedling reactions of wheat varieties to stem rust and leaf rust and of oat varieties to stem rust and crown rust

Canadian Jour Res Sect C Bot Sci 18(10): 489-506

A study of the rust reactions of wheat vars. to 20 physiol. races of Puccinia gramirus tritici showed that several vars. of the vulgare type, namely, McMurachy, Eureka, and several strains from Kenya, are. immune in the seedling stage at ordinary greenhouse temps. (55-80[degree] F daily). This immunity largely disappears when the plants are kept at a constant high temp. (75-80[degree]). Certain other vars. and hybrid strains were found rather highly resistant to 8 physiol. races of P. triticina, but none of the vulgare vars. tested showed immunity or high resistance to both rusts. Tests to determine the resistance of oat vars. to the physiol. races of P. g. avenae and P. coronata avenae prevalent in Canada showed that 4 oat vars. derived from the cross Hajira X Joanette were resistant to all the physiol. races of P. g. avenae used in the test, and that certain strains derived from the cross Victoria X (Hajira X Banner Sel. 524) were resistant to all but 1 of these races. The last mentioned strains and the vars. Victoria and Trispernia proved resistant to the 9 races of P. coronata to which they were tested.
