Studies in the inheritance of physiological characters. II. Further experiments upon the basis of hybrid vigour and upon the inheritance of efficiency index and respiration rate in maize

Studies in the inheritance of physiological characters. II. Further experiments upon the basis of hybrid vigour and upon the inheritance of efficiency index and respiration rate in maize

Ann. Bot, Oxford 96: 1007-32

Hybrid vigour is thought to be due simply to a larger initial embryo size in the hybrid. Dry weight determinations, at intervals, of two inbred lines and their F1 hybrid indicated that the two parents differed in their efficiency indices while the rate of increase in the F1 was similar to that in the higher parent.
