Studies on the biology of Valsa sordida and Cytospora chrysosperma

Studies on the biology of Valsa sordida and Cytospora chrysosperma

Phytopath 30(6): 459-475

Numerous isolates of C. chrysosperma from Populus and other genera of hardwood trees, and of V. sordida from P. tremuloides were compared as to structure of pycnidia formed on sterile bark and on agar, size of conidia, rate of growth on agar, and general cultural characters. No consistent difference was found between isolates from different spp. of host plants or between isolates of C. chrysosperma from various hosts and V. sordida from P. tremuloides. No good basis was found for separating C. chrysosperma from what have been considered other spp. of Cytospora, C. chrysosperma was found to be a common inhabitant of the bark of healthy trees of several spp. of poplar and willow, as well as mountain ash and some other trees. On these trees it fruited only when the trees were dying or after they were dead. The writer considers its parasitism on these trees as questionable.
