Studies on the secretion of milk fat. 3. The effect of thyroxine administration on the blood lipoids and on the nature of the milk fat

Studies on the secretion of milk fat. 3. The effect of thyroxine administration on the blood lipoids and on the nature of the milk fat

Biochem Jour 34(7): 1093-1107

10 mg. thyroxine per day were administered to 4 cows at different stages of their lactations for 10-15 days. The blood lipids and milk fat were studied both before and after hormone treatment, and also during its adm. when the milk and milk fat yields were much increased. There was no important alteration in the actual nature of the milk fat during the period when its yield was enhanced except for a slight temporary change at the beginning of the thyroxine treatment when the gland was becoming accustomed to its increased production of fat. The general sugar level in the plasma appeared to rise by 10-26% and the main lipid constituents to fall by 10-20%. The relation between the lipids of the plasma and the yield of milk fat is discussed.
