Several systems of cultivating rice are in use in Uzbekistan, and the fields can be classed under three different types, viz.: fields under running water that is supplied by a spring or river and may be clear, moderately turbid, or very turbid; fields with slowly moving clear water fed by seepage; and fields under still water. Moreover, the fields of any of these types may be irrigated by the chain system or the single-plot system, in which the water passes through each individual plot separately from the irrigation ditch into the waste-water conduit.
