The nomenclature of the cereal smut fungi

The nomenclature of the cereal smut fungi

Plant Dis Reporter 28(20): 663-670

Under date of Apr. 30, 1940 the Secretary of Agriculture approved as official for the U. S. Dept. of Agriculture, the Internat. Rules of Botanical Nomenclature for all plants, including fungi. Adherence to these rules involves a number of changes in names now commonly used in American myco-logical practice, particularly true of the cereal smut fungi. This work is an attempt to follow the Internat. Rules, as interpreted by the writers, after giving all possible consideration to the opinions and suggestions of those (mycologists) who critically studied the proposed changes. Pertinent synonymy and comment are offered where needed. It is emphasized that nomenclature is secondary to taxonomy.
