The response of corn to nitrogen fertilizer and to different methods of applying the fertilizer as affected by soil type and past soil management

The application of 40 Ib. per acre of N gave higher yields than of 10 Ib. when applied as a side dressing while the maize was small, but the 10 Ib. applications gave higher increases in yield per Ib. N. Increases were generally greater on dark-coloured than on light-coloured soils. Largest responses to N were obtained where the N-content of the soil had been lowered by grain farming and erosion, while the response was low on maize following clover.
