Investigations showed that yellowing of the needles of young silver firs (Abies alba) first noticed in the autumn of 1942 and observed in several forests in Haute-Marne, France, was due to a Cecidomyiid, Agevillea abietis, gen. et sp. n., of which the egg, larva and adults are described. The adults appear in late April and early May, and the eggs are laid singly on the young needles when the buds are opening, usually on the upper surface.
