Guineapigs of 300 to 350 g. weight were given the diet lacking in the antistirrhess factor (Abst. 3416, Vol. 14), and were killed after intervals of from 3 to 72 weeks. The oxygen consumption and. anaerobic glycolysis of liver, kidney and muscle tissue were determined in the Warburg apparatus In liver tissue from deficient animals there there was an increase in oxygen uptake and a decrease in anaerobic glycolysis with a considerable decrease in the glycogen content of the liver. The metabolic changes were corrected when the antistifihess factor was given to the animals for some weeks, and in vitro when adenosine triphosphate was present. In kidney cortex and in muscle from deprived animals there was a decrease in oxygen uptake and no change in anaerobic glycolysis. Addition of adenosine triphosphate in vitro increased the anaerobic glycolysis of kidney and muscle tissue. The relation is discussed of these findings to the authors' theory of the action of the antistiffness factor.
