A recent outbreak of honey poisoning. 7. Observations on the toxicity and toxin of the tutu (Coriaria Arborea Lindsay)

No evidence was obtained for the presence of mellitoxin or the other toxins of poisonous honey in any part of the tutu plant. Tutin was the only toxin isolated from the young shoots, leaves and stems. Honeydew deposited by the passion vine hopper (Scolypopa australis) gave mellitoxin and evidence of other toxins, indicating that tutin is converted to other toxins on passage through the insect. Continuous extraction with ethyl acetate gave the best yield of tutin.
