A study of the carotene and crude protein content of orchard grass (Dactylis glomerata L.). 1. Variation due to stage of growth, cutting management and clones

A study of the carotene and crude protein content of orchard grass (Dactylis glomerata L.). 1. Variation due to stage of growth, cutting management and clones

Canad. J. Agric. Sci 33(2): 184-94. bibl. 16

Studies were made of the crude-protein and carotene contents of 10 clones of orchard grass, representing early- and late-maturing types, subjected to cutting at 4 growth stages, as follows: (a) when 6 to 8 in. high; (b) at inception of heading; (c) at inception of anthesis; and (d) ripe seed; and also subjected to 2 cutting treatments as follows: (1) cutting at the hay stage, followed by close clipping of aftermath, and (2) continuous close clipping to simulate grazing.
