In June, 1950, hazel-nuts (Corylus avellana) growing in different parts of Piedmont, Italy, became infected by Monilia fructigena. not previously recorded on this host in Italy. Infection caused a brown discoloration and withering of the shell and husk, and was generally followed by fruit drop.
