BCG on Sauton's medium; effect of a long series of subcultures on the morphological and biological properties of BCG cultures

The loss of vitality undergone by BCG cultures grown exclusively on Sauton's liquid medium is studied and the findings of the Danish workers on this point discussed. From the fourth passage onwards, the cultures grow less profusely and less rapidly and form granules instead of films on the surface of the liquid; the size of the bacilli is reduced and their power to produce local reactions in guineapigs is diminished. A single passage on potato restores the vitality of the culture.
