Chromatographic estimation of carotene in feeds and feed ingredients

Samples of poultry mash, dried lucerne, pig feed, maizemeal or other material were refluxed for 1 hr. With a 1: 1: 1 mixture of toluene, ethyl acetate and 95 per cent. ethanol. The cooled solution was filtered and the solvent evaporated. The residue was dissolved in light petroleum containing 10 per cent. acetone and analysed chromatographically on magnesia diluted With diatomaceous earth.
