Comparative afforestation trials with planting seedlings in contour trenches and pits.

Comparative afforestation trials with planting seedlings in contour trenches and pits.

Nauc. Trud. lesotech. Fak. selskostopan. Akad., Sofia. 2, 155-78

Two-year-old Pinus sylvestris and P. nigra var. austriaca were planted in 1939-42 near Sofia on eroded cinnamon-brown forest soils (S. aspect, 15-30 degrees slope) in: (1) 40 X 40 cm. pits, 7000/ba., as controls; (2) contour trenches of triangular (40-45 cm. deep, 90-95 cm. wide, and 1-2 m. long) and trapezoid cross-section (bottom width 20 cm., top 110-120 cm., length 12 m.), both types having the following slopes: external slope (covered with stones) 55 degrees , inward face of trench 35 degrees (planted up), outward face 50 degrees. As compared with pits, the trenches were found to retain much more moisture from snow and rainfall, the soil down to 20-40 cm. containing during the growth period 4-9 times as much; the temperature on the planting face during hot summerdays was 4-5 degrees C. lower, and after 13 years, losses due to dying-back were 1/4-1/8 and the trees were twice as high, with larger buds and needles.
