Contribution to the genesis of terra rossa. I. Does terra rossa represent an illuvial horizon of forest soils?

Poljopriv. Znanst. Smot, 10/11: 99-106

Stremme's hypothesis that terra rossa represents the illuvial horizon of a forest soil is examined, and it is concluded that the hypothesis is not applicable to the terra rossa of the Croatian carst, a parent matter from which, under present climatic and vegetation conditions, new zonal soil types are developing. The formation of terra rossa from limestone and dolomite takes place in the absence of vegetation when the bare rock is exposed to the sun.
