Control of established Johnson grass in cotton fields

Control of established Johnson grass in cotton fields

Proc Southern Weed Conf 7: 59-61

Repeated spot-oiling of crowns reduced the stand of scattered infestations of established Johnson grass in cotton 98% or more at College Station both in 1952 and 1953. Four spot-treatments with a naphtha-type oil were used in 1952 and five in 1953. The stand of old Johnson grass was reduced 80% in 1953 with a single oiling of the crowns when 1/4 pint of hexachloroacetone per gallon was added to the oil. Fall applications of 50 lbs./A of TCA reduced the stand of thick infestations of old grass 95% or more and did not affect the following cotton crop in 1952. Following mowing for hay, the foliage of established Johnson grass and alfalfa, was broadcast-sprayed with 10 pounds of Dalapon per acre in 1953. This killed the grass to the ground and prevented regrowth of 48% of the treated clumps with only temporary injury to the alfalfa. Spot-treatment of the regrowth grass killed it to the ground. The two sprayings prevented regrowth from 80 percent of the treated clumps. Alfalfa is an excellent crop for rotation with cotton on alluvial soils near College Station.
