Previous work showed that microbial action causes the disappearance of 2, 4-D from soil. Evidence was obtained that pre-treatment with certain compounds, among them 2, 4-D itself, increased the rate of breakdown of subsequent applications of 2, 4-D, presumably by stimulating a population competent to break down this kind of compound. 2, 4-D was applied at rates of 2.5, 10 and 50 mg./lb. of soil; its decomposition was completed in 8, u and 21 days at these rates.
