A rapid extraction method for the detn. of sugar in forage plants is described. Extraction of either green or dried forage material with an alcoholic soln. in the Waring Blendor was as complete as with the longer A.O.A.C. method employing a Soxhlet extraction. Both carotene and sugar can be extracted simultaneously from green forage material by using a mixture of ethanol and Skellysolve and the blendor. When aqueous NaCl is added to the extract, carotene remains in the epiphase while the hypophase may be used for sugar analysis.
