Diagnostic criteria for human brucellosis; report No. 2 of the National Research Council, Committee on Public Health Aspects of Brucellosis

Diagnostic criteria for human brucellosis; report No. 2 of the National Research Council, Committee on Public Health Aspects of Brucellosis

Journal of the American Medical Association 149(9): 805-808

The only absolute confirmation of the diagnosis of brucella infection in human beings is the isolation of the organism from the patient. The dermal sensitivity test is valueless for the diagnosis of a suspected case. An agglutination reaction titre of 1: 320 or higher reasonably, but not absolutely, confirms a presumptive diagnosis. A standardized, reliable brucella antigen should be readily available for all laboratories. -W.
