Gall midge fauna (Diptera, Cecidomyiidae) of South Tyrol: 6. Gall midges of the western partDuring investigations in the western part of South Tyrol in 2005, 117 gall midge species were found at 19 localities situated at altitudes from 270m up to 2500m a.s.l. Among them, 8 species are new records for the fauna of ltaly (Dasineura aparines, D. armoraciae, D. helenue, Geocrypta rostriformis, Geomyia alpina, Macrolabis stellariae, Plemiella abietina, Resseliella skuhravyorum). Additional 6 species are new records for South Tyrol (Aphidoletes aphidimiyza, Contarinia Gei, Dasineura capsulae, D. glyciphylli, D. xylostei, Rhopalomyia baccarum). Therefore the presently known gall midge fauna of South Tyrol contains now 243 species. An annotated list of species found in South Tyrol in 2005 is given with details of collection sites as well as biological data. The gall midges are associated with 87 host plant species. The average species number per each locality is 14 species (ranging from 4 to 29). The number of gall midge species decreases with increasing altitude. A total of 12 gall midge species are associated with alpine and subalpine host plant species. Dasineura phyteumatis, Hygrodiplosis vacinii, Oligotrophus panteli and Resseliella skuhravyorum occur in alpine zone at altitude of 2500m a.s.l. The following species occur abundantly: Iteomyia capreae on Salix caprea and related Salix-species and Cystiphora taraxaci on Tarazacum offichiale. A total of 66 species have European, 41 Eurosiberian, 5 Holarctic and 5 Subrnediterranean distribution. Rabdophaga rosaria (H.Loew, 1850) is a valid (resurrected) name and not a synonym of Rabdophaga strobilina (Bremi, 1847).
