Dissemination of white clover (Trifolium repetis) by sheep

Dissemination of white clover (Trifolium repetis) by sheep

N. Z. J. Sci. Technol 33(5): 64-77. bibl. 6

Sheep grazing on a pasture containing approximately 98 lb. of ripe white clover seed per acre passed from 1 to 7 g. of seed per day in their dung. White clover seed in dung spread on steam-sterilized soil showed a germination of 16 per cent in 155 days. After the first 3 weeks the rate of germination of the seed in dung was similar to that of the " hard" seeds extracted from dung and incubated at 15 degrees C. on moist filter paper.
