Effect of Trichomonas gallinae from diseased mourning doves on clean domestic pigeons

Effect of Trichomonas gallinae from diseased mourning doves on clean domestic pigeons

Journal of Parasitology 37(5 1): 473-478

T. gallinae from 5 sources of ill mourning doves (Zenaidura macroura) and from one healthy dove were put into trichomonad-free common pigeons (Columba livia). Considerable virulence variation existed among the 6 strains. Recovery from a sublethal trichomoniasis was accompanied by nearly complete protection against damage from highly virulent strains. Inoculation with a weak, though immunizing, strain plus a highly virulent one produced variable results in 13 recipients: none escaped oral caseation, 6 were killed, 1 barely survived, 6 had mild lesions.
