Effect of different rates and times of application of nitrogen fertilizers on the yield of Hannchen barley

Three fertilizer expts. were conducted during 1950 to 1952 to study the response of spring applications of N on the yield of Hannchen barley grown under dryland conditions. The N treatments included different rates of application, different application times, and 2 sources of N, namely, ammonium nitrate applied in the dry form and urea applied as a foliar spray. The rainfall during the 1950 growing season was 3.11 in. below the average and the barley yield was very low with no response to the additional N. Significant increases in yield were obtained with the 25 and 50 lb. rates of N when applied as ammonium nitrate in both 1951 and 1952. Yield increases were also obtained when the N was applied at seeding time and when the plants were 6 in. tall over applying the N before plowing. Applications of N as a foliar spray produced yield increases over the no-fertilizer treatment in 2 of the 3 yrs. The N applied early, when the plants were 6 in. tall was more effective than the N applied at the later stages. Higher yields were obtained from applications of ammonium nitrate to the soil than from the same rates of urea N applied as a foliar spray.
