Effect of fertilizer on rice weevil damage to corn at harvest

Observations were made in Alabama in 1949-52 to ascertain whether fertilizers applied to maize affected the degree of damage by Calandra (Sitophiliis) oryzae (L.) to the kernels at harvest. In 1949, treatments with nitrogenous fertilizer affording 50-200 lb. nitrogen per acre caused no significant difference in weevil damage as determined by Frankenfeld's method, but treatment with 48-120 lb. per acre resulted in a significant correlation between rate of nitrogen and weevil damage, the average percentage of injured grains increasing from 47.9 to 78.7 as the dosage of nitrogen increased. In 1950 and 1952, treatment with 30-120 lb. nitrogen per acre had no effect on weevil damage. No significant differences in infestation resulted from treatments with phosphate or potash fertilisers.
