Two groups of four Brown Swiss cows in early lactation, producing 10 to 15 kg. of milk daily, were used in a 13-week trial in which the effect of underfeeding on milk yield and quality was studied. The cows in the control group received clover silage, hay and aftermath ad libitum resulting in an average intake of 6.8 kg. of starch equivalent and 1.15 kg. of digestible protein. This ration satisfied the theoretical requirements of the animals.
