Probably the most serious leaf disease of maize in Guatemala, especially between 4, 000 to 6, 000 feet, is Helminthosporium turcicum. first found by the authors in 1945 in the San Antonio Huista and Jacaltenango regions of the Cuchumatanes mountains. In 1946 it was very destructive in the Coban region, 5 to 20 per cent. of the September crop being damaged, and in experimental plots near Guatemala City.
