Data are given of the digestibility and nutritive value of the lye-treated cereal straw from a number of trials in Norway. The use of the Becmann process resulted in a loss of about 20% of the dry-matter content of straw, most of the loss being N-free extractives, protein and ash. The digest-ibility of the organic matter of straw rose by about 25 units (from 42 to 66) following lye treatment; respective values for N-free extractives were 37 to 61 and for fibre, 51 to 79.
