The Mo content of typical Hawaiian soils and plants was detd. colorimetrically by extracting the colored molybdenum-thiocyanate complex with normal butyl alcohol. The total Mo content in soils ranges from 8.9 to 73.8 ppm., with an avg. of 25.8 ppm. This element is higher in the surface horizons and descreases with depth. The exchangeable Mo in surface soils ranges from 0 to 0.13 ppm. The Mo content of plants, chiefly grasses, ranges from 0 to 2.5 ppm., much less than 6 to 36 ppm. reported from other areas where teart disease exists. Plants seem to take up more Mo from productive soils where the reaction is neutral or slightly alkaline. Sudan grass did not respond to appln. of Mo but definitely showed toxic effects from the 2000 lbs. treatment. There was a greater amt. of Mo in the sudan grass which received larger amts. but not in proportion to 10-fold increase. Appln. of lime and of sulfur to one acid soil did not change the fixation rate of added Mo.
