Citrus trees grown in sand culture were well developed and healthy where all the N was supplied as NO3, but were stunted and suffered from dropping leaves and from multiple bud formation (as caused by Cu deficiency) where the whole N supply was of the NH4 form. Those receiving all or 75% as NO3 had normal leaves, but with increased proportions of NH4 salts the mature leaves developed increasingly marked chlorotic areas similar to those caused by deficiency of Zn, Mn or Fe.
