The studies were made on 7 patients with confirmed pernicious anaemia, before treatment, or in relapse. An extract with 70 per cent. alcohol, such that 1 ml. extract was equivalent to 40 g. lean beef muscle, was used. Microbiological assay gave a vitamin B12 content per 10 ml. of 0.9 micro g. with Lactobacillus lactis, Dorner, and of 0.37 micro g. with Lactobacillus leichmannii. Only one of the patients showed a reticulocyte response to 10 ml. of the extract, alone, by mouch.
