It has been shown by the analysis of suitably collected data that where the rooting profile of trees encounters some restricting layer in the subsoil, such as clay or hard rock, so that the major part of the root development necessarily takes place above this layer, there is a correlation between depth of free-rooting material within the soil profile and the height quality of the forest crop (i.e. total height at 50 years. of age).
