Parenteral nutrition. 6. Fat emulsions for intravenous nutrition. The turbidimetric determination of infused fat in blood after intravenous administration of fat emulsions

The amount of infused fat in blood was estimated turbidimetrically, Hb being removed by treatment with ammonia and H2O2. Extraneous turbidity due to a reaction between the plasma and the phosphatide in the fat emulsion was also removed with ammonia. This method gives a somewhat lower value than micro-oxidation methods, as it estimates only infused fat, whereas the latter estimate free fatty acid and cholesterol also.
