Production of nicotinic acid deficiency with 3-acetylpyridine, the ketone analogue of nicotinic acid

In 1938 it was observed that dogs suffering from nicotinic acid deficiency succumbed promptly to a single dose of 3-acetylpyridine, a structural analogue of vitamin B6, while normal dogs were unharmed (Abst. 3145, Vol. 8). Mice receiving a diet of sucrose 75, vitamin free casein 18, salt mixture 5, maize oil containing vitamins A and D 1, and vitamin B1 riboflavin, vitamin B6, Ca pantothenate, choline chloride and inositol, grew as well as animals having nicotinic acid in their diet.
