Quantitative inheritance of fruit size in red pepper (Capsicum frutescens L)

The inheritance of fruit length, width, shape index or ratio of length to width, and weight was studied in crosses between two varieties, Red Chili with small elongated fruit and Sunnybrook with large oblate fruit. Length and width of fruit were found to be largely the expression of factors for shape and weight. Evidence was obtained of the existence of a single gene pair for shape with incomplete dominance of the oblate type. The genotypic variances were all accounted for by the segregation of this gene pair. Distributions of fruit weights of the F2, F3 and F4 are positively skewed but become normalized by logarithmic transformation. The effects of genes and environment upon fruit weight are found to be multiplicative. The minimum number of genes affecting fruit weight in the cross studied has been estimated as between 20 and 33. The decreasing trend of means for fruit weight from the F2 to F4 leads to the conclusion that the genes are preponderantly dominant for large fruit. A study of variance reveals some evidence of linkage and epistasis.
