RECOMMENDED nutrient allowances for dairy cattle

RECOMMENDED nutrient allowances for dairy cattle

Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association 108: 172-175

As a safe margin above minimum requirements, 0.6 lb. of digestible protein per 1000 lb. live wt., with an allowance of 125% for the amt. in the milk given, is recommended. From 18 mos. to 1st calving, 10-21 gm. of P and 6-12 gm. of Ca are required with a ratio of Ca: P of 1:1 or 2:1. For each lb. of milk produced, 0.75 gm. of P with 10 gm./lOOO lb. live wt. for maintenance, and 1 gm. Ca/lb. milk, are suggested. Where advisable, 0.015% I included in the salt supplied at 1% level in the grain ration may be given. Calves require 0.6 mg. of Mg/100 lb. daily. 21 gm. of NaCl/1000 lb. wt. with 9 gm. for each 10 lb. of milk should be supplied. 2.4 mg. carotene/100 lb. is required for Holstein calves in winter. With age, about 0.6 mg./lOO lb. is necessary for maintenance, with 90 mg./lOO lb. supplied 6-12 wks. before parturition. The total digestible nutrients and water intake should be ample. Under ordinary conditions, vit. D will be adequately supplied by sunlight and sun-cured roughage. These requirements are normally met by 2-3 lb. hay/100 lb. weight (with silage, 3 lb. = 1 lb. hay, up to 30-40 lb. daily) plus 1 lb. grain/3-4 lb. milk.
