The production of buriey tobacco in the cool northern parts of Japan has declined in recent years, owing mainly to its poor quality and in particular its strong biting flavour. Analyses were carried out on leaves from different parts of the stems of plants set out in the field on various dates and supplied with various manures. Low-grade leaves, with a strong biting taste, were characterized by high total and protein N contents and low carbohydrate contents.
