Sugar-cane research in Mauritius during 1948

Sugar-cane yields were highest when percentages of nutrients in dry matter of leaf samples were: -N 1.85-1.9%; P2O5 0.45%; K20 1.40%. In the soil of the majority of small plantations all three nutrients were deficient. Percentage of sugar in the cane was increased slightly, and yield in tons of sugar per arpent greatly, by N applied at 30 kg./arpent, but doubling the rate decreased the first quantity and failed to increase the second.
