Some promising forms of wheat with branching ears were obtained at the Baskirian Breeding Station by continuous selection of a hybrid between the nonbranching wheats Pionerka and Lutescens 53/12. The breeding work began at Kinelj, where an F1 plant bearing an ear with two complementary glumes was selected. More extensive changes in the structure of the ears occurred in the F2 and later generations. The changes were cumulative and heritable.
