Abstract
Studies were carried out on mulches and mulched soils in apple and cherry orchards. Decomposing plant materials were found to lose mainly K during their decomposition. The water-holding capacity of partially-decayed plant matter seemed to be rather high. It was found that large amounts of K and organic compounds with a high C: N ratio dissolved out of the organic mulches into solution.
