Tryptophane, leucine, valine, isoleucine and cystine were assayed by Lactobacillus arabinosus 17/5; methionine, lysine, phenylalanine and histidine by Leuconostoc mesenterioides P-60; and arginine and threonine by Streptococcus faecalis (lactis) R. The natural L acids were active as growth factors, but the D forms were inactive. For all assays except tryptophane hydrolysates were prepared by autoclaving with 2.5N-HCl for 5 to 6 hr. at 15 Ib. pressure.
