The effect of amorphous and crystalline (chloroform-containing) colchicine, of iso-colchicine, chloroform, and acenaphthene on root meristems of C. autumnale and B. vernum was studied. Both spp. show absolute resistance to the c-mitotic action of colchicine and iso-colchicine (in the latter case only Colchicum tested) in high concs. (20% and 1%, respectively). Their response to chloroform is similar to that of colchicine-sensitive plants such as Allium cepa, the threshold value of c-mitosis being at 0.025%. They give typical c-mitosis on treatment with crystalline colchicine in such concs. as have a chloroform content above the threshold conc. of this sub-stance. Both spp. are susceptible to the c-mitotic action of acenaphthene. As an explanation of the data of susceptibility of Colchicum to colchicine encountered in literature, it is suggested that a substance containing chloroform may have been employed. The possibility of 2 types of resistance of living cells is discussed, viz., a physical, less selective resistance and a chemical resistance, in each separate case directed against a certain specific attack.
